India's tri-series cricket campaign received a jolt on Thursday with left-handed opening batsman Gautam Gambhir ruled out of the series because of a groin injury.
"Gautam Gambhir has stressed his groin muscle and has been advised rest for 10 days," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.
"He will be returning to India. The All India Selection Committee will name his replacement for the tri-series in Sri Lanka curtly," he added.
Gambhir's return means India will be without both their regular openers since Virender Sehwag is already out of battle since he is recovering from a shoulder surgery.
In the absence of Sehwag, Gambhir was expected to open with the seasoned Sachin Tendulkar and shoulder largeness of the responsibility.
India will play their 1st game of the tournament tomorrow against New Zealand.
