Zaheer to miss Champions Trophy 2009

Strike Fast bowler Zaheer Khan has undergone shoulder surgery and is probable to miss next month's triangular one-day series in Sri Lanka & Champions Trophy 2009 in South Africa, local media reported on Friday.

Zaheer had the operation in South Africa last month and could be out for up to 5 months, the “Times of India” reported.

There was no instant confirmation from the cricket board or the player, who reportedly wanted to keep the information from the media to shun enquiries during his initial recovery.

"The news was kept under cover as the player needed it to be that way so that no one troubled him during the vital first phase of recovery," a source close to the fast bowler told the newspaper.

Zaheer has been recommended a minimum of three months rest by Dr. Mark Ferguson, who had formerly treated Sachin Tendulkar, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble.

The source said that Zaheer Khan was "very happy" post surgery. Speaking about his overall condition, the source said "He's put on a little weight but is cheerful. He is very keen to hit the gym but has been advised rest. His recovery has been excellent and the doctor, his rehab team and physio are all delighted with his condition.

The 30-year-old left-arm bowler endured the injury while fielding during the Indian Premier League 2009, though still played in the World Twenty20 in England in June, the newspaper said.
